Weighted Average With ECTS Credits — European Guide
Learn how to calculate your weighted average with ECTS credits in the European Higher Education Area. Step-by-step examples, GPA conversion, and free calculator.
What Are ECTS Credits?
ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) credits are the standard measurement in the European Higher Education Area. One academic year equals 60 ECTS credits, and each credit represents approximately 25 to 30 hours of student work.
ECTS System Highlights
- 1 full academic year = 60 ECTS
- 1 ECTS ≈ 25-30 hours of work (classes + self-study)
- A bachelor's degree (3-4 years) = 180-240 ECTS
- A master's degree (1-2 years) = 60-120 ECTS
Calculating Your Average With ECTS
Your weighted average with ECTS credits uses the same formula as any weighted average:
Average = Σ(Grade × ECTS) ÷ Σ(ECTS)
Example from a European university:
- Algebra: 8.5 (6 ECTS)
- Physics: 7.0 (9 ECTS)
- Programming: 9.5 (6 ECTS)
- Economics: 6.5 (6 ECTS)
(8.5×6 + 7.0×9 + 9.5×6 + 6.5×6) ÷ (6+9+6+6) = (51+63+57+39)÷27 = 210÷27 = 7.78
Converting to GPA
To convert your ECTS-based average to a US GPA on a 4.0 scale:
GPA = (Your average / Maximum possible grade) × 4
For example, if your average is 7.78 out of 10: GPA = (7.78/10) × 4 = 3.11
